- Romania's immigration system provides many options for employers of foreign nationals. Romania is a member of the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Area. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type.
- Business visitors to Romania require a Schengen C Visa (also called a Uniform Visa) unless they are visa exempt based on their nationality. The visa is valid for maximum 90 days in a 180-day period. For longer stays or broader work activities, a long-term entry visa followed by the applicable residence permit is required.
- The main work authorization route is the Unique application for local hires which combines a long-stay visa and work authorization. The current categories are: D/AM1 which is limited to highly qualified workers and specific categories, including nationals of Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia, alongside athletes and academic staff. The standard route is the D/AM2 for non-highly skilled employees but limited to positions listed in the official Deficit Occupations List.
- Alternatively, Romania offers the EU Blue Card for locally hiring eligible highly-skilled employees. Additionally the EU Intracompany Transferee (ICT) Permit for managers, specialists, or trainees transferred within the same corporate group from outside the EU. Romania also offers a Digital Nomad visa, valid for up to six months, for remote workers employed by or owning companies registered outside Romania.
