- The immigration system of the People's Republic of China (PRC) includes mechanisms for temporary stays and limited options for foreign nationals to acquire permanent residence. Most foreign nationals must be sponsored for their visa to China. While China has a unified work authorization policy, regional differences and the involvement of multiple government entities for each application step exist.
- Foreign nationals working in China for up to 90 days and conducting work activities (such as technical or scientific research, managing projects, or providing guidance for a cooperating party in China) may use the short-term work permit, subject to certain exceptions. They must secure a “Z” visa or "R" visa to enter China which allows them to apply for work authorization post-entry.
- Long-term work authorization applicants must meet certain criteria including a points-based system that categorizes eligibility based on educational qualifications, position, salary, and work experience. Qualified applicants are issued a Work Permit and a work-type Residence Permit. Dependents may accompany the principal work visa holder by securing an “S” visa.
