The immigration system of the People's Republic of China (PRC) includes mechanisms for temporary stays as well as some limited options for foreign nationals to acquire permanent residence. Almost all foreign nationals must be sponsored for their visa to China.
China has a unified work authorization policy, whereas a regional system used to prevail. Nonetheless, regional differences and involvement of multiple government entities for each application step do continue to exist.
Long-term work authorization applicants must qualify under certain criteria including a points-based system that categorizes eligibility based on their educational qualifications, position, salary and work experience. Those who qualify are issued a Work Permit Card and a work-type Residence Permit. Dependents may accompany the principal work visa holder using an “S” visa.
Foreign nationals working in China for up to 90 days and conducting certain work activities such as technical or scientific research, managing projects or providing guidance for a cooperating party in China, may use the short-term work permit, subject to certain exceptions. They must apply for a “Z” visa to enter China, which will allow them to start working immediately upon entry.
