Pakistan is currently undergoing a process of economic liberalization, including a privatization program of government corporations that aims to attract foreign investment. Major sectors of the economy include agriculture, mining and industry (information technology, construction, textiles, among others).

Foreign nationals traveling for business can obtain a five-year Business Visa through a Pakistani consular post provided they are nationals of one of approximately 95 countries that form a "List of Business-Friendly Countries" (BVL). The maximum allowable stay is three months per entry. Alternatively, BVL country nationals can obtain a 30-day visa-on-arrival in Pakistan if they hold a recommendation or invitation letter from an approved authority in Pakistan. Foreign nationals entering Pakistan for more than 90 days, or those seeking employment, must obtain a work authorization (work visa). Work visas are generally granted for up to two years with a possibility of extension.
