Because immigration officers can exercise broad discretion, the immigration process in the Philippines is inconsistent and often varies. Nevertheless, there are options for temporary visas and permanent residence. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by visa classification.

Business visitors to the Philippines typically use the Section 9(a) Temporary Visitor’s Visa, with allowable stay lengths depending on nationality.

A Philippine-registered company must sponsor a foreign national’s application for work authorization. For assignments of six months or less, a Special Work Permit (SWP) is the appropriate work authorization. For assignments that exceed six months, there are several work visas available. In general, work permit or work visa applications can only be filed once the applicant has entered the Philippines. New document requirements can add to processing times.

Note that increased documentary and authentication requirements often delay the work permit process.
