About Somalia

Whether your company is sending employees to Somalia or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • Somalia’s immigration system provides several options for employers of foreign nationals. Employers sponsoring foreign nationals must first register with the Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA). To register, a company must submit its articles of association, commercial license, company profile, and the passport of its head. The ICA then issues a Sponsor Code, which the company can use to invite a foreign national and arrange electronic entry approval before travel. Electronic visas are commonly used for business, employment, tourism, and diplomatic travel. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and extension requirements vary by immigration permission type.
  • Business visitors may attend meetings, negotiate contracts, and explore commercial opportunities. The initial permitted stay is generally 30 days. Visitors who intend to undertake employment activities must first obtain the required work permit and appropriate immigration permission before starting employment activities.
  • The most common form of work authorization is a work permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, followed by the corresponding ICA work visa or permission to stay. Work-based permission may be granted for 3, 6, or 12 months, up to a maximum of 1 year per grant. A longer stay requires renewal. Depending on the applicant's circumstances and subject to meeting the requirements, a work visa extension or a gratis extension for qualifying diplomatic missions or personnel may be available.
  • Entry approval or a short extension of stay does not, by itself, authorize employment.

Before a foreign national begins working in Somalia, the employer must obtain the required work permit and appropriate immigration permission.

Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
