About Zambia
Whether your company is sending employees to Zambia or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.
- Zambia's immigration system provides several options for employers of foreign nationals. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type.
- Most business travelers to Zambia require a Business Visa, allowing a stay of up to 30 days within a rolling 12-month period that starts with the traveler’s first entry. Some foreign nationals who receive gratis visas are visa exempt while others can obtain a visa on arrival. Foreign nationals from restricted countries must obtain a deferred visa to enter the country.
- An Employment Permit is required for foreign nationals who have been offered an employment permit for two years. However, if the foreign national's passport expires within two years of employment, the Employment Permit will be issued with varying validities as determined by the expiry of the passport. Once issued, the foreign national can travel to Zambia for endorsement. Visa nationals will be required to apply for a business visa to enter Zambia for the collection of their Employment Permit. Other circumstances that may affect the issuance of an Employment Permit may be the complexity of the skills required to conduct the activities, and the length of time required to train local workers in the designated area of expertise. A local employment contract is required and there are restrictions on client site work.
- The Temporary Employment Permit (TEP) is issued to any business visitor intending to remain in Zambia for a period exceeding 30 days. The period granted must not exceed six months within a rolling 12-month period that starts with the traveler’s first entry. Foreign nationals can obtain a TEP twice at the point of entry, but there may be additional scrutiny after the second TEP application. The Ministry of Home Affairs issues a confirmation of work registration within 14 days.
Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
