- Canada's immigration system is a dual intent system, which allows foreign nationals to enter Canada as workers, students, or visitors, while also seeking permanent resident status based on skilled work, business, or family ties.
- Business Visas are generally valid for six months, but Temporary Residence Visas (TRVs) must be obtained from a Canadian consular post and may be issued for a longer period in certain circumstances. Visa-exempt nationals are required to obtain electronic travel authorization (eTA), except for U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents who are exempt from this requirement.
- Foreign nationals in Canada require work authorization if they receive compensation from, report to, or are employed by a Canadian entity, or perform billable work in Canada. The main work authorization type is the Intracompany Transfer Work Permit. The validity of this visa depends on the foreign national's position and is granted at the immigration officer's discretion. There is no labour market testing requirement for this category. Dependent family members can accompany the main foreign national applicant under this category, including an unmarried same- or opposite-sex partner with whom the main applicant has cohabitated for at least one year before the application filing date. Other work authorization types, among others, include LMIA Work Permit (for roles requiring a labour market impact assessment); CUSMA Professional Permit (for U.S. and Mexican citizens, exempt from labour testing); and Reciprocal Employment (C20), which allows work in Canada when similar opportunities exist for Canadians abroad.
