Paraguayan law provides short-term and long-term work authorization options to foreign nationals seeking to work in the country. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by visa classification.
 
Visa-waived nationals can enter Paraguay without a visa as tourists/nonresidents to conduct business activities. Visa nationals require a consular visa to enter Paraguay. Nonresident entries are generally granted for 90 days, extendable once for an additional 90 days, for a maximum of 180 days in a 12-month period. 
 
Foreign nationals are exempt from work authorization requirements if their intended stay is less than 90 days and their activities are not remunerated in Paraguay. 
 
Foreign nationals seeking to work in Paraguay for more than 90 days must secure work authorization. The most common types are:
 
• Short-term Transitory Residence (Residencia Precaria) - valid for six months and renewable once for six additional months
• Temporary Residence - valid for one year, renewable for a maximum of five times
• Mercosur​​​ Temporary Residence - for nationals of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, valid for two years and renewable once for the same term
• ​Permanent Residence
