- Afghanistan’s immigration system provides limited options for employers of foreign nationals. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type.
- Afghanistan permits short-term business visits for purposes such as attending meetings, conducting market research, or exploring investment opportunities. Business visitors must obtain a business visa sponsored by a recognized Afghan business or government entity. This visa requires approval from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The standard validity is one to two months, with extensions available upon application to MoCI. Visa fees are paid on arrival. A transition to an online system is underway to improve efficiency.
- The primary work authorization is the Work Permit, issued to foreign nationals sponsored by registered Afghan employers. The process involves multiple steps: invitation clearance from ACBR&IP and MoI, submission to MoFA, and entry visa issuance through the designated Afghanistan Embassy. After entry, the foreign national must secure the work permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA), which is valid for one year and requires renewal. The final step is obtaining a multiple-entry visa. The full process typically takes 2-4 weeks. Cost ranges between USD 120- USD 200 for single-entry visa, USD 100 for medical exams, and USD 300 for work permit printing.
