About Malawi

Whether your company is sending employees to Malawi or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • Malawi's immigration system provides limited options for employers of foreign nationals.
  • Eligible foreign nationals intending to conduct business activities must obtain an eVisa, which is valid for 30 days and may be extended for a further 60 days upon application and payment of appropriate fees. Those seeking to change their status to work-authorized must apply for a Short-Term Work Authorization (Temporary Employment Permit). SADC nationals are visa-exempt for up to 90 days but must renew their entry status every 30 days.
  • Foreign nationals who intend to engage in short-term, active, productive work in Malawi must obtain a Temporary Employment Permit (TEP). The TEP application is filed and processed before entering into Malawi. TEPs are ordinarily valid for up to six months and can be extended for an additional six months after which the foreign national must apply for a long-term work permit (Employment Permit). A TEP application renewal must be submitted three months before the expiry of the permit.
  • Foreign nationals intending to engage in long-term, active, productive work in Malawi must obtain an Employment Permit. The Employment Permit is valid for two years and is processed before entering into Malawi. Dependents may accompany the Employment Permit holder.
