The general intent of Japan's immigration system is two-fold: to permit visitors and immigrants to come to Japan to contribute to Japan's economy and to regulate the stay of foreign nationals coming into the country.

Japan's system provides for business visits of up to 90 days. Some nationals are visa-exempt for the purpose of business visits.

There are several types of work authorization in Japan, including intracompany transferees (valid for stays of up to five years for foreign nationals who have worked overseas for the home company for at least one year prior to being transferred and whose job duties are of a professional nature); business managers (for foreign nationals who are necessary, either as investors or managers, to open a new business entity in Japan); and skilled laborers (for foreign nationals with at least ten years of relevant professional experience or who hold a university degree relevant to the position).

Foreign nationals with work authorization valid for more than three months are required to register their residence address in Japan with the local ward office after they enter the country. A re-entry permit or special re-entry permit is required for them to travel outside of Japan and maintain their residence status.
