If your company is sending employees to Japan—Fragomen is here to help. Working closely with our Local Advisors in Japan, we provide the immigration strategies and support you need to get your employees on the ground as quickly as possible.

The basic goal of Japan's immigration system is twofold:  (1) to permit visitors and immigrants to come to Japan to contribute to Japan's economy and (2) to prevent workers from coming to Japan to directly compete for employment with Japanese citizens.

Japan's system provides for business visits for up to 90 days. Some nationals are visa exempt for the purpose of business visits.

There are several types of work authorization in Japan, including intracompany transferees (valid for stays up to five years for foreign nationals who have worked overseas for the home company for at least one year prior to being transferred and whose job duties are of a professional nature); Business Managers (for foreign nationals who are necessary, either as investors or managers, to open a new business entity in Japan); and Skilled Laborers (for foreign nationals with at least ten years of relevant professional experience or who hold a university degree relevant to the position).

Note that upon entry, local registration is required. A reentry permit is required to travel outside of Japan and maintain legal status.

Detailed Immigration Snapshots, Document Lists and Process Guides are available to clients on request.
