- Georgia’s immigration system offers relatively limited options for employers seeking to hire foreign nationals. Since March 1, 2026, foreign nationals must obtain the right to work before undertaking remunerated activities in Georgia, including short-term assignments, are subject to a mandatory work permit requirement. Employers may also be required to complete a labour market test, and quotas may apply to certain roles. Processing of the work permit is up to 30 calendar days.
- Work permits are typically issued for an initial period of one year and must generally be renewed annually during the first few years. After several years of continuous residence and employment, longer permit extensions may become available.
- After receiving the right to work, visa-required nationals generally need to obtain a Category D1 visa (long-term work visa) to enter Georgia for employment purposes. Following entry, foreign nationals are required to apply for a temporary residence permit.
- Foreign nationals who have legally resided in Georgia for five years may be eligible to apply for permanent residence, provided they meet additional statutory requirements.
Business Visitors
- Visa-exempt business visitors may generally stay in Georgia for up to one year, provided they engage only in permissible business activities.
- Visa-required nationals typically need to apply for a short-term Category C visa for business purposes, which may be issued as either an electronic visa or a sticker visa. The permitted length of stay is usually up to 30 or 90 days per visit.
