About Falkland Islands

Whether your company is sending employees to the Falkland Islands or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • The Falkland Islands’ immigration system provides limited options for employers seeking to hire foreign nationals. Requirements, procedures, forms, processing times, and eligibility criteria - including those relating to accompanying family members - vary depending on the permit type and whether the employment is based at a military facility.
  • Employers must sponsor foreign employees and their accompanying family members, including covering accommodation and return flights to the employee’s home country. Sponsorship obligations remain in effect until the employee and family depart the Falkland Islands, the employee acquires the right to remain, or a new employer assumes sponsorship. These obligations continue even if the employment relationship ends while the employee or family members remain on the islands.
  • Visitors intending to work in the Falkland Islands must obtain a work permit unless the activity is exempt. In limited cases, a time-bound visitor permit may be issued for business purposes. Visitor permits are typically valid for one month and may be obtained upon arrival.
  • The most common types of work authorization include Work Permits (Employer-Specific), Short-Term Work Permission, Accompanying Dependent Permits (ADP), and Volunteer Permits. All positions must be advertised in the Falklands before a work permit is granted.
  • Work permits applications cannot be filed from within the Falkland Islands, except in cases of renewal or transfer of an existing permit.

Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
