About Cayman Islands

Whether your company is sending employees to the Cayman Islands or expanding your worldwide footprint—Fragomen is here to help. Our experienced immigration professionals partner with businesses of all sizes to develop immigration strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • The Cayman Islands' immigration laws provide several options for employers of foreign nationals. Requirements, processing times, employment eligibility, and benefits for accompanying family members vary by permit type.
  • Business visitors may stay in the Cayman Islands for up to 10 days per visit. To conduct business activities (i.e., work-permit-exempt activities), visa-exempt nationals require permission from the Cayman Customs Border Control before traveling. The processing time for this permission - called an "exemption" - is typically 48 hours. Visa nationals require a Visitor Visa to travel to the Cayman Islands. Indian, Chinese, and Jamaican nationals may be visa exempt if they hold a valid visa issued by Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States (in which case they must be traveling to the Cayman Islands directly from the country that issued the visa).
  • Companies in the Cayman Islands that regularly need workers from overseas to work in the Cayman Islands for up to 14 days per visit may apply for a Business Visitor's Permit, which allows these individuals to work for a specified number of visits per year. However, strict limitations apply. A case-specific consultation with an immigration professional is recommended.
  • Foreign nationals conducting activities outside the prescribed list of business activities (work-permit-exempt activities) or conducting permissible business activities for more than 10 days require a work permit. A Temporary Work Permit authorizes work for up to six months. Extensions are available if the original permit was issued for less than three months. Long-term workers use the Annual Work Permit to work for up to five years. Extensions are available up to a maximum cumulative stay of nine years, after which the foreign national must apply for permanent residence or remain outside the country for at least 12 months before applying for a fresh permit.
  • In 2020, the Cayman Islands launched the Global Citizen Concierge Program for eligible digital nomads and remote workers to work from the Cayman Islands for up to two years. However, applications under the program are no longer accepted until further notice.

Fragomen can also consult on citizenship matters and, as permitted within the confines of local law, may be able to offer citizenship assistance.
