Singapore's immigration system provides for both non-immigrant and immigrant entry. Mechanisms for non-immigrant stays fall into two general categories: visit passes and work passes.

Visa waiver nationals can obtain Visit Passes upon arrival, for both social and business visits up to 90 days. Visa required nationals need to apply for and obtain an entry visa from a Singapore consular post prior to travel.

Work permit types (called Work Passes) include Employment Passes for professionals, S Passes for mid-level skilled workers, and Work Permits for skilled and unskilled workers. Work passes are required for foreign nationals who will engage in employment, certain entrepreneurial activities, and some types of training in Singapore. Employment Pass holders' dependents can apply for work authorization, which must also be sponsored by the Singaporean employer.

Note that the grant of an Employment Pass and S Pass is purely discretionary. Qualifications and qualifying salaries have been tightened in recent years, and the Ministry of Manpower retains its flexibility to consider applicants on a case-by-case basis. Also note that renewal applications must be filed before the existing pass expires or it will not be considered a renewal.
